Part-time and freelance CFO in Luxembourg
An SME, start-up or subsidiary that does not need a finance director five days a week can rely on a part-time CFO: a few days a month, or full time during a transition. Askfreelance puts you in touch with finance profiles reviewed by our team, free of charge.
When does a part-time CFO make sense?
Part-time works when the need is real but not full time. Typical situations:
- the company is growing and the founder can no longer manage cash, margins and forecasts alone;
- a funding round, a bank loan or a new investor calls for a solid financial plan and regular reporting;
- the CFO position is vacant and someone has to cover while you recruit;
- a one-off project: new accounting software, a first budget, management control or a faster monthly close.
What companies usually hand over
Budget and cash-flow forecasts, management dashboards, relations with the bank, the accounting firm and the auditor, setting up management control, preparing committee and board meetings. A part-time CFO does not replace your accounting firm or chartered accountant: the CFO steers, they produce and certify within their legal remit.
Askfreelance also covers related roles: management controllers, consolidation and reporting managers, treasurers, financial analysts and internal auditors.
Self-employed or employee?
A part-time CFO can work as an independent contractor (invoicing days) or as a part-time or fixed-term employee. In Luxembourg, carrying out a self-employed activity on a regular basis generally requires a business permit (autorisation d’établissement), and the self-employed person registers with the CCSS. If the person works under your instructions, on your schedule and inside your organisation, the relationship looks like employment: choose an employment contract instead. Our guide Self-employed or employee in Luxembourg explains these points with official sources.
Describing your need
State the volume (for example two days a week for six months), the deliverables, the tools (ERP, accounting software, spreadsheets or BI), working languages and the level of data access. Say whether on-site presence is needed, for board meetings for instance. The more concrete the request, the faster the match: see how to write a clear freelance brief.
Before you start: what to check
- Data access: who grants access to the accounting software, online banking and contracts? Read-only or with posting rights?
- Role with third parties: can the CFO represent the company with banks, or only prepare the files?
- Confidentiality: include a suitable clause, especially during a fundraising or a sale.
- Routines: a monthly meeting with management and a shared dashboard prevent misunderstandings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a part-time CFO and an interim CFO?
A part-time CFO works a few days a month over time; an interim CFO fills the position, often full time, for a defined period (vacancy, reorganisation). Both can be posted on Askfreelance in the same way.
Can a part-time CFO replace my accounting firm?
No. Bookkeeping for third parties and chartered accountancy are regulated professions in Luxembourg. The CFO steers and analyses; the accounting firm keeps its role.
How much does the matching cost?
Nothing. Askfreelance is free for businesses and freelancers alike, with no commission. The price of the service is agreed directly between you and the professional.
Can we work in English or German?
Yes. Every profile lists its working languages (French, English, German, Luxembourgish…), and you can state your preferred language in your request.
